DocuSign, explained

Is DocuSign free?

Signing a document someone sent you through DocuSign is free. Sending your own documents for other people to sign is not: that needs a paid plan once the free trial ends. Here is where the line falls, and what it costs in Australia.

Facts last checked

Refrendo is in a closed beta. Beta organisations use it free.

What you can do free

What you have to pay for

Sending documents for other people to sign. DocuSign’s page for signers puts it plainly: if you’re collecting signatures from others, you will need to upgrade to a paid plan. Its Australian pricing page lists no free plan for sending.

If you only ever sign what others send you, DocuSign costs nothing. If you need to send a contract, a quote or a form to someone else, you are paying for a plan once the trial ends.

What the cheapest plans cost in Australia

DocuSign publishes Australian prices on its own site. These are the monthly prices on annual billing:

PlanPrice (billed annually)Sending allowance
PersonalA$15 a month (A$180 a year), one user5 envelopes a month
StandardA$37 per user a month (A$444 a year)100 envelopes per user a year
Business ProA$59 per user a month (A$708 a year)100 envelopes per user a year

An envelope is one sending: the documents and the people they go to. Our guide to DocuSign pricing in Australia works out what each plan costs per document.

Free ways to send a document for signature

A free plan is fine for a handful of documents. If you send every week, compare paid plans on the cost per document sent, and on whether the people who only approve or sign need a seat.

Questions

Can I sign a DocuSign document without an account?

Yes. If the document was sent to you through DocuSign, you open the link in the email and sign. DocuSign says signing is always free and recipients don’t need an account.

Does DocuSign have a free plan?

Not for sending. DocuSign’s Australian pricing page lists no free plan, and its signers page says that to collect signatures from others you need a paid plan. There is a free trial of the paid plans, with no credit card needed to start.

How long is the DocuSign free trial?

DocuSign’s own pages describe it differently, so check the length on the sign-up page when you start. When it ends, DocuSign keeps the account open as a free account for signing, with no need to cancel; sending documents for signature needs a paid plan.

What is the cheapest DocuSign plan in Australia?

Personal, at A$15 a month billed annually (A$180 a year). It is for one user and sends five envelopes a month.

Is there a free alternative to DocuSign?

A few tools have free plans that let you send a small number of documents each month. Adobe allows two signature requests every 30 days with a free Acrobat account. Refrendo’s free plan sends 3 requests a month, and during the closed beta you request an invite first.

Join the closed beta

Refrendo is invitation-only for now. Organisations in the beta send free for as long as it runs.
