Witnessed signatures
You can ask for a signer’s signature to be witnessed, signer by signer, in a request, a template or through the API (Business and above). Allow one way or both:
- On the signer’s device: after signing, the signer hands their phone or computer to the witness, who is counted as seeing it in person.
- By email: the witness opens their own link and says whether they saw the signing in person or over a video call.
Name the witness when you send, or leave it to the signer. Nobody already on the request can be the witness.
What the witness does
The witness sees only the pages with their own fields, fills them in, and signs. Before they finish, they confirm, word for word: “I saw [the signer] sign this document in person (or over a video call), that I am at least 18, and that I am not a party to it.” They are emailed a copy of their declaration, and can’t download the document itself.
A witness who didn’t see the signing can say so, and the signer names someone else. Reminders go to witnesses who haven’t acted, and a witness doesn’t count towards your plan’s people per request.
On the record
The certificate lists the witness as “Witness for [the signer]”, seen in person or over a video call, with their declaration under Statements confirmed.
Refrendo records who witnessed, how they say they saw it, and what they declared. It doesn’t check anyone’s identity, and whether a witnessed signature meets the requirements for a particular document is for the parties to decide. This is general information, not legal advice.
